Was 1999 the Best Year in Movie History?

by admin

With the recent news of the Avengers becoming the fastest movie to hit the $500 Million dollar mark, a recent debate has come has come up to weather this is due to inflation or was it just that good of a movie? With Toy Story 2 being an easy movie to compare it too because of how much it grossed i started to remember the other films that came out that year and i wonder, was 1999 the best Movie year in history?

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace was a hit and everybody knew it was going to be a hit. There were a lot of critics that rated it poorly but the movie still grossed a billion dollars. Yes a billion dollars and came out again in 3d in 2012. Star wars changed movie history so just for it being part of the series makes it a classic even if this episode was sub-par.

The Matrix: Still one of favorites over here at The Inspired Minds (red or blue pill) and it still is culturally referenced in TV shows. Grossed $463 Million at the box office and was Christmas present must have that year.

Toy Story 2 not only set records in the box office and VHS/DVD records but it was the movie in the Pixar revolution that let people know they were here to stay. The movie grossed $485 million in the box office and is a classic that still is a must have even in this new generation of kids.

Fight Club: Even though it was not one of the top grossing films of 1999 it was one of the best. The movie became a classic over-time and became one of Brad Pitts best movies ever. Grossed 100 million at the box office.

Not many scary movies make that much money at the box office anymore but this one did. Made over $672 Million and was loved but almost every major critic that year. Its one of the movies you have to bring up when talking about Brue Willis’s best.

American pie: Even though it got bad reviews the movie grossed $235 Million and was a huge hit among the teenagers when it came out. You can still call this film a success any way you slice it because they came out with 3 more American Pies with the most recent being released in 2012

American Beauty: The movie cost 15 million to make and made over 350 million in the theaters. Great profit margin right?

The third movie of Pierce Brosnan as James Bond and it grossed $360 million, wouldn’t mark it down as a classic but it deserves to be included on the best movies of the year.

Office Space wasn’t a hit in the theaters but it has become a classic over the years as more and more people see it and wonder how this hilarious movie got over looked. With so many people being able to relate to the work environment that is recreated in the movie it became a widely popular rented and purchased movie.

Other notables: Green mile, Any Given Sunday, Dogma, Three Kings, The Mummy, Life, Girl interrupted, Notting Hill, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me and Tarzan.

So all these great movies came out that year, with at least 3 being in even the smallest movie collections, who can argue that 1999 was, if not the best year in movie history, not a great year?

and If not 1999 which year was better?
